Brooklyn, NEW YORK CITY - Bay Ridge - Shore Road - 1930:  In 1930, Shore Road in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn transitioned from a strip of dilapidated elite estates into an early wave of multi-family apartment buildings while facing the onset of the Great Depression.
Major Changes in the 1930s
-   Apartment Development: Following 1928 zoning changes that allowed multi-family housing on Shore Road, early brick apartment buildings (such as those at numbers 7101, 7119, 8701, 9615, and 9949) went up in the early 1930s.
-  The Crescent Athletic Club: The massive social club property—located where Fort Hamilton High School sits today—collapsed financially and closed its Bay Ridge clubhouse by 1931, ending an era of expansive private grounds along the bluff.
-  The Great Depression: Economic hardship hit local property owners and stalled grand plans to finish the original 1895 road and park improvements.
-   Belt Parkway Planning: Robert Moses first proposed the Belt Parkway (Shore Parkway) in 1930, which later radically altered the waterfront west of Shore Road starting with construction in 1934.
-  Crescent Hill Resistance: Wealthy families who stayed built up the "Crescent Hill" section between 75th and 87th Streets where apartment construction remained restricted at the time.
