NEW YORK HARBOR - Ferries - 1906 - GLITTER:  In 1906, New York City expanded its municipal ferry system by taking over private lines like the Whitehall-39th Street (South Brooklyn) route and beginning construction on major civic landmarks like the Battery Maritime Building.
The Municipal Takeover
-  City Control: Following municipal operation of the Staten Island Ferry starting in late 1905, the city assumed control of the New York and South Brooklyn Ferry and Transportation Company route in 1906.
-   Department of Docks and Ferries: The city agency managed harbor transit infrastructure, boat slips, and terminals.
