Vintage Antique 1898 Sherwin & Cotton William Ewart Gladstone Ceramic Portrait Plaque. An exceptional original Victorian ceramic portrait plaque depicting The Right Honourable William Ewart Gladstone (1809–1898), one of Britain’s most influential Prime Ministers, manufactured by the renowned Sherwin & Cotton pottery of Hanley, Staffordshire. It is in greta condition.


The reverse is impressed:

“Made by Sherwin & Cotton at their Works in Hanley in the County of Stafford 1898.”

The date is especially significant, as 1898 was the year of Gladstone’s death, making this a contemporary commemorative piece produced during one of the most important moments in Victorian political history. Comparable examples have been attributed to designer George Cartlidge and produced using Sherwin & Cotton’s celebrated Émaux Ombrants process, a technique that creates remarkable depth and photographic realism beneath a rich translucent glaze
