Listing Description
Available for sale is a scarce 1893 first edition of Twenty-Two Years' Work of the Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute at Hampton, Virginia, published directly by the Hampton Normal School Press, copyright 1891 by General Samuel C. Armstrong.
Bound in the original dark pebbled publisher's cloth with bright gilt lettering and the institute's emblem on the front board and spine, this volume chronicles the biographical sketches, educational milestones, and employment histories of over 700 African American and Native American graduates and ex-students from 1868 to 1890. Most notably, pages 57–58 feature a primary biographical account of Booker T. Washington (Class of 1875). The volume is complete with all fold-outs still bound within including a panoramic frontispiece illustration of the waterfront campus, alongside all four folding maps: Map of Hampton and Vicinity (page 1), Map of the School Grounds (page 31), Starred Map, showing Colored Graduates' Schools (page 305), and Starred Map, showing Location and Occupation of Returned Indian Students (page 480).
Condition
Good overall antique condition - the original publisher's cloth covers show expected surface rubbing, light edge wear, and corner softening; the reverse has a couple of small nicks near mid-spine but covers are otherwise intact. Spine shows some light fading but gilt text still fairly vibrant and fully legible. Front cover text and school emblem very good, mostly sharp and distinct. The inner hinges have partial splits along the patterned endpapers at top and bottom with some mesh showing but are otherwise still intact.
The original spine backing and glue have released from the outer cloth casing, causing the text block to pull away and sag forward from the hollow spine when standing upright. Internally, the text block remains intact, however a preliminary flyleaf before the frontispiece has been torn out leaving some paper stub along the gutter line as shown. As described above, all four fold-out maps are still present, supple, clean and quite sound for age, with some small typical tears at connection points to pages. The text pages exhibit mild, uniform age-toning throughout but remain clean, flat, and legible with minimal foxing present. Covers and pages are free of writing, names, bookplates, or library markings.
