Found by my late father on the Somme battlefield in La Boisselle, The Somme Valley, France in 2011.
This is a exploded segment of a British WW1 18 pounder shrapnel shell that he subsequently used as a paperweight.
It is heavy, over 2kg and sealed by the local car bodyshop,so it doesn't mark whatever it rests on.
The piece also has handpainted in cream enamel WW1 SHELL

We were given permission by the explosive detection team at Charles De Gaul airport to bring it home at the end of our pilgrimage.

Clearly the item is inert and not dangerous. £1 coin to give idea of size. Not included in auction
