29 x 24 cm large book in a half leather and marble paper binding over boards with a flat spine and gilt lettering in a gilt box for the title. Previous owners armorial bookplate of Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell Baronet of Monreith to the front bookplate with loose library shelf ticket for the Monreith House Library. Some toning to the end paper + half title (with the Limited edition number of 8 of 50 to the reverse) Frontispiece + tissue guard + Title page + 216pp + 1pp advert + 2 pages tear without loss approx 2 cm from edge+  6 pages of pencil margin notes + 7 plates. with tissue guards, some light foxing present, pages untrimmed and paper is thick. 

The Provenance: The copy belonged to Sir Herbert Eustace Maxwell, 7th Baronet of Monreith (1845–1937). His armorial bookplate paired with the loose shelf ticket from the Monreith House Library establishes an immaculate lineage. Maxwell was a celebrated Scottish antiquarian, archaeologist, and President of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland (FSA Scot), this was his personal copy of a major regional archaeological work. Marginal notes - they are almost certainly written in his hand. If verified, these notes represent his personal academic critique of M'Dowall's work.

This book is a comprehensive historical and architectural study of Lincluden Abbey (later converted into a Collegiate Church), located on the outskirts of Dumfries, Scotland. Written by the prominent local historian William M'Dowall, it details the site's transformation over four centuries from a Benedictine nunnery into a rich collegiate establishment, before its ultimate ruin during the Scottish Reformation.
