The History & Symbolism behind the Penal Cross:

During Ireland's Penal Era (17th–18th centuries), practicing the Catholic faith was strictly forbidden. To avoid persecution, these unique crucifixes were designed with intentionally short horizontal arms so they could easily be slipped away and hidden up a jacket sleeve or inside a pocket.

This cross is richly adorned with traditional folk art symbols of Christ's Passion:

Submerging it in water—or introducing tap water minerals and harsh dish soaps—can strip away this protective seal, causing the bronze finish to prematurely oxidize or tarnish, and potentially degrade the leather hanging cord.

How to Clean: To safely maintain its beautiful shine, simply dust it lightly with a dry, soft microfiber cloth or a soft-bristled brush.
