"Yei Be Chai"

This is an exceptional Zapotec weaving. Subject is "Yei Be Chai" dancers who embody the Yei spirits during the Navajo healing ceremony. They are often shown in profile with one foot up expressing movement as seen here. Yei refers to the Navajo Holy People who are powerful, benevolent spiritual beings acting as mediators, creators and healers in Navajo mythology. 

These weavings primarily come out of Teotitlán del Valle, Oaxaca, Mexico which is known for its textiles especially rugs which are woven on hand operated looms with wool obtained from local sheep and dyed mainly with local natural dyes. Quality of wool here is exceptional. 

This weaving is larger than typical. Measures 54 inches by 96 inches that's 4.5 feet by 8 feet (138 cm by 244 cm). It weighs a very substantial 7 pounds 4 ounces. Woven in traditional colors of grey, black, red and white wool.
