The Students Rome : A History of Rome from the earliest times to the establishment of the Empire , with chapters on the History of Literature and art by Henry G Liddell DD Dean of Christ Church Oxford , illustrated by numerous engravings on wood , New Edition published in London and printed for or by John Murray 1875. 

Half leather and cloth bindings over boards with raised bands ot the spine and red label with gilt lettering , simple gilt decoration to the bands, head of spine with some light chipping. Previous owners name of W B B Maclagan , Gownboys, Charterhouse, Godalming, Surrey to the front pastedown , same name to the first end paper, embossed stamp of "library of J.W. Jan Walker" to the 2nd end paper + "W D Maclagan to the reverse of the frontispiece + Title page (with name to top) + xxvii + 1pp errata + 672pp , some pencil lines to the margins but few, clean pages otherwise , no foxing. missing last end paper. 
The Student: Walter Douglas Dalrymple Maclagan (born 1862) entered Charterhouse School in 1876, The House: "Gownboys" is one of the oldest and most famous boarding houses at Charterhouse, originally dating back to the school's 17th-century London origins before it moved to Godalming, Surrey, The Family: Walter was the son of William Dalrymple Maclagan, the highly influential Archbishop of York. Walter followed his father into the church, graduating from Pembroke College, Cambridge, and becoming Chaplain to the Archbishop.
Henry George Liddell was one of the most famous classical scholars of the Victorian era. Aside from writing this history text, he co-authored the world-famous Liddell & Scott Greek-English Lexicon. He is also famously known in pop culture as the father of Alice Liddell, the young girl who inspired Lewis Carroll to write Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. [1]
