Originally titled " A visit from St. Nicholas," the poem was written in 1822, just
a few days before Christmas. It was penned by Clement C. Moore, a New York
seminary professor and classical scholar. He wrote it strictly for the enjoyment of
his own children. In the century and a half since, his poem has become a classic
and a strong influence in shaping our current images and traditions of Santa Claus.
