PHILIP BOULDING - Harp (VINYL LP 1988) **NEW/SEALED**

A gentle, luminous solo-harp album from Philip Boulding of Magical Strings.

Boulding’s music sits at the meeting point of Celtic folk tradition, acoustic instrumental music, and the quietly meditative sound that later became associated with New Age and ambient listening. Rather than treating the harp as a formal classical instrument, he uses it as a storyteller’s instrument: clear, ringing, melodic, and intimate.

The program includes original pieces such as “First of Spring,” “June Morning,” “Jester,” “Waterville Nocturne,” “Song for Reconciliation,” “St. Bridget’s Mantle,” “Brittany’s Dream,” “Jamaican Childhood,” “Twilight Aire,” and “The Quiet Garden.” The titles accurately suggest the mood—nature, travel, folklore, night music, and quiet reflection—but the album is not mere background sound. Boulding’s playing has rhythmic movement, delicate ornamentation, and a handcrafted warmth that rewards close listening.

This was Boulding’s first solo release apart from Magical Strings, the husband-and-wife Celtic ensemble he founded with Pam Boulding. Their work centers on Celtic music and dance and includes performances on harp and hammered dulcimer.

A lovely sealed find for Celtic-harp collectors, Magical Strings fans, Flying Fish Records collectors, Pacific Northwest folk listeners, acoustic instrumental buyers, and anyone who enjoys peaceful but musically detailed vinyl.
