Franz Berwald is one of classical music’s great rediscoveries: a fiercely individual Swedish Romantic composer whose music can sound graceful, witty, dramatic, and unexpectedly modern. His concertos are especially rewarding because they combine the melodic appeal of early Romantic music with unusual turns of harmony, rhythm, and form that make them stand apart from the standard nineteenth-century repertoire.
The Piano Concerto has the charm and brilliance of a lost Romantic favorite—at times recalling Schumann, early Beethoven, and late Mozart, yet always with Berwald’s own quicksilver personality. A critical appraisal calls it “a delight,” comparing it favorably to the Schumann concerto and recommending it to listeners drawn to early Romantic music.
The Violin Concerto offers a very different, rarer experience: a distinctive early work with a Schubert-like opening, lyrical themes, and a notably individual character. It is an excellent discovery disc for the listener who has exhausted the familiar concerto canon and wants music with genuine melodic beauty but a fresh historical voice.
Ulf Björlin’s involvement gives the album additional authority. He was a prominent Swedish conductor and a committed advocate for Berwald’s orchestral music; later EMI collections under his name gathered Berwald’s overtures, concertos, and symphonies. This makes the LP more than a random repertoire coupling—it is part of a serious effort to restore a neglected national composer to the concert hall and recording catalog.
