Carl Nielsen’s First Symphony is restless, youthful, and full of character—music that begins in darkness and tension before fighting its way to an exuberant major-key conclusion. It is already recognizably Nielsen: rhythmic, unpredictable, warmly melodic, and more individual than its 1892 date might suggest.
André Previn brings exceptional drive to the work. His approach is direct and energetic rather than merely picturesque, emphasizing Nielsen’s sharp accents, sudden shifts of mood, and forward momentum. The London Symphony Orchestra supplies bright, disciplined playing and a full late-1960s RCA sound. This remains especially interesting because it was Previn’s only recording of a Nielsen symphony.
Also included is the Prelude to Act II from Nielsen’s opera Saul and David, a concise dramatic work that adds another attractive piece of rarely encountered Scandinavian orchestral repertoire.
