Original 1975 "The Great Match" Pinback Button Set
Offered is an original four-piece promotional pinback button set commemorating the legendary 1975 match race between Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure, one of the most famous and memorable events in Thoroughbred racing history.
The lot includes:
• Large 2 1/4" "The Great Match – Ruffian" pinback
• Large 2 1/4" "The Great Match – Foolish Pleasure" pinback
• Small green 1 1/8" "HER" supporter button
• Small white 1 1/8" "HIM" supporter button
These original promotional buttons commemorate the historic July 6, 1975 match race at Belmont Park. The simple "HER" and "HIM" buttons allowed fans to show which horse they supported and have become sought-after pieces of vintage horse racing memorabilia.
Condition
The fronts display very well with bright colors and good gloss.
The reverse of the two larger buttons shows oxidation and surface rust consistent with age and long-term storage. The two smaller buttons remain in better overall condition. All four retain their original pin assemblies.
