Joseph Merrick, the Elephant Man, remains one of the most recognisable medical figures of the Victorian era.
We wanted to create a display piece that did justice to the extraordinary asymmetry and pathology of his skull, rather than producing a simplified interpretation.
This piece was sculpted by Carnivore Studios with an obsessive focus on the distorted cranial structure, enlarged areas of bone, asymmetry of the face and jaw, individual teeth and irregular surface detail that make Merrick's skull instantly recognisble.This is the most accurate version available based on existing CT scan data.
This is supplied as a complete freestanding display.
The skull sits above a detailed section of cervical vertebrae supported internally by a brass rod, creating a much more natural anatomical presentation than a standard skull-on-a-stick display.
The lower jaw is hinged using custom brass pins, allowing natural movement while keeping the jaw correctly aligned with the cranium.
The finish on this piece is not created with a single quick wash.
Each display is painted by hand in multiple stages to build depth into the bone surface, emphasise the extraordinary texture and irregularities of the skull and create the aged specimen appearance shown in our photographs.
The result is a much richer and more convincing finish, with variations across the bone that help every ridge, cavity and abnormal growth stand out.

Our aim was to create the most convincing Joseph Merrick skull display we could produce, preserving the extreme asymmetry, bone deformation, unusual dentition and facial structure that make his anatomy so distinctive.
At almost 15 inches tall and sitting on an 8-inch base, this has genuine presence.
