Offered here is a rare 1659 silver jeton issued for the city of Rouen during the reign of Louis XIV. This historic type commemorates the Peace of the Pyrenees and the dynastic marriage arranged between Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Spain.

Obverse: The square arms of Rouen, featuring the Paschal Lamb beneath three fleurs-de-lis, displayed within an ornate cartouche. The surrounding legend reads CIVITAS ROTHOMAGENSIS, meaning “City of Rouen.”

Reverse: A dove—the bird of Venus—flies right across a strait while carrying an olive branch toward a coastal city. The legend reads FERT PACEM CYPRIDIS ALES, meaning “The bird of Venus brings peace,” with the date 1659 below.
