Historical & Background Information: Issued during World War II by the Allied Military Government for Occupied Territories (AMGOT), this 500 Lire note was put into circulation following the Allied invasion of Sicily and the Italian mainland starting in 1943. Printed by the United States Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) and Forbes Lithograph, these notes were used to pay Allied troops and stabilize local commerce while avoiding the disruption of domestic currency supplies. The reverse design features the Four Freedoms championed by Franklin D. Roosevelt in his 1941 State of the Union address: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Religion, Freedom from Want, and Freedom from Fear.
