Official Japan Post commemorative stamp sheet from the 1965 Japanese Philatelic Week Series, featuring “Jo no Mai” by renowned Japanese artist Uemura Shoen.
This issue features “Jo no Mai” (Prelude Dance), a celebrated painting by Uemura Shoen (1875–1949), one of Japan’s most renowned female artists and a leading master of traditional Japanese bijin-ga (beautiful women) painting.
The elegant figure and refined composition beautifully represent the grace and beauty of traditional Japanese culture. Uemura Shoen was highly acclaimed for her paintings of women in traditional Japanese settings and was awarded the Order of Culture for her outstanding contribution to Japanese art.
This 1965 issue is also notable as the Japanese Philatelic Week series began featuring works by renowned modern Japanese artists after a period in which ukiyo-e had been prominently represented.
