Philip I was appointed Praetorian Prefect by the emperor Gordian III, whose demise he quickly engineered. He became emperor in 244 AD and ruled Rome during the celebration of the city's 1,000th anniversary. Usurpers in the east rose up and he took the field against them, and was defeated and killed in 249 AD by the forces of Trajan Decius.

This coin is a sestertius (large bronze) issued under his reign and pictures his bust facing right on the obverse and the on the reverse shows four military standards.

The portrait is expressive and the devices are clear.
