Striking antique French pewter wine jug, or ferrière, dating to approximately the 19th century. This substantial piece features a rounded bulbous body with a tall tapered neck, sculptural strap handle, and an expressive mascaron face terminal at the base of the handle.

The original fitted pewter stopper remains attached by a heavy linked chain—an especially wonderful detail that adds to the primitive European character of the piece.

The underside bears a BDS hallmark beneath a fleur-de-lis style mark. While the specific maker associated with the BDS mark has not been definitively identified, comparable French pewter ferrières bearing the same mark and nearly identical construction have been attributed to the 19th century.

Measures approximately 12” tall × 8” diameter.

The pewter retains a beautifully aged dark gray patina with surface scratches, oxidation, discoloration and other signs of age and use throughout. Please review photos closely for condition and details. The piece has intentionally been left in its naturally aged state rather than polished.
