Developed by MicroProse (Alameda) and published by Hasbro Interactive under the MicroProse label, Falcon 4.0 was originally released in 1998; the 2000 date on this copy corresponds to a later retail printing that prominently advertises the final official Version 1.08 patch. Centered on the F-16C Block 50/52 Fighting Falcon and a large-scale conflict on the Korean Peninsula, the simulation combines detailed avionics, radar and weapons systems, demanding flight modeling, tactical engagements, multiplayer combat, and a real-time dynamic campaign in which air and ground forces continue operating throughout the larger war.

Falcon 4.0 helped set a benchmark for hardcore combat flight simulation by combining unusually detailed aircraft systems with an ambitious dynamic campaign rather than relying solely on isolated scripted missions. Its simulated war continuously generated missions from changing battlefield conditions, giving individual sorties consequences within a larger conflict. The game also developed an extraordinary life beyond its original commercial support: following the end of official MicroProse development and the subsequent source-code leak in 2000, community projects continued expanding and refining its simulation framework for decades.

Collectors interested in Falcon 4.0 may also want to explore Falcon 3.0 (1991), the earlier major installment that established many of the series' simulation concepts; Falcon Gold (1994), a compilation containing updated versions of Falcon 3.0 and its expansions; F-16 Multirole Fighter (1998), another period simulation focused on the F-16; Jane's F-15 (1998), a contemporary study simulation emphasizing detailed modern combat avionics; Jane's F/A-18 (2000), another highly detailed modern jet simulation from the same era; and Falcon 4.0: Allied Force (2005), a later standalone Falcon release built from the original Falcon 4.0 codebase and subsequent development work.
