18thC Salvaged Copper Rod from the Wreck of HMS Association (Sir Cloudesley Shovell)

Association served as the flagship of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell in the Mediterranean during the War of the Spanish Succession and her engagements included the capture of Gibraltar on 21 July 1704, and the Battle of Toulon in summer 1707. Later that year in October, whilst returning from the Mediterranean after the Toulon campaign, commanded by Captain Edmund Loades, with Admiral Shovell on board, struck the Outer Gilstone Rock off the Isles of Scilly, and was wrecked with the loss of her entire crew of about 800 men.

Three other ships, HMS Eagle, Romney and Firebrand were also lost, bringing the death toll to nearly 2,000. The Scilly naval disaster was one of the greatest maritime disasters in British history, instituting a more precise method to determine longitude by the Admiralty.

The wreck was later discovered in 1967 with the assistance of the RN minesweeper HMS Puttenham, with the salvors discovering cannons, gold coins etc which were sold in 1969 at Sotheby’s, which led to more government legislation, notably the Protection of Wrecks Act 1973, passed in an attempt to preserve British historic wreck sites as part of the maritime heritage.

The wreck is now a Protected Wreck managed by Historic England

This particular find comes with two glass display stands, history pamphlets and the 20cm long copper rod has a adhesive paper label 'HMS Association' Flagship and treasure ship of Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell, sank Isles of Scilly 1707-Roland Morris Team Salvor’.
