Broadsword calling Danny Boy……

Superb Mahogany Mounted Bronze Royal Navy HMS Broadsword Tampion Badge (c.1980’s)

Broadsword was the first Batch 1 Type 22 frigate of the RN, commissioned in 1979 and was called into service whilst on sea trials, as the command ship during the large rescue operation required after storms struck the 1979 Fastnet race.

She famously took part in the 1982 Falklands War and was paired with HMS Coventry on the 25th May to draw Argentine aircraft away from the landings at San Carlos. Unfortunately due to missile system failures, both ships were attacked with the Broadsword being hit by one bomb which bounced up through the helicopter deck, hitting the Westland Lynx helicopter, before exiting and exploding harmlessly.

Sadly, the Coventry wasn’t as lucky, bombs from the two Argentine Douglas A-4 Skyhawks damaged and sunk the Coventry with Broadsword subsequently rescuing 170 of the sunken ships crew.

She had a busy service career, including West Indies Guard ship deployments, participating in Operation Grapple (Yugoslavia), in the Adriatic Sea in 1993 before being sold to Brazil in 1995.

The bronze badge came to me plastered in Brasso and so it’s been unscrewed from the mahogany base and lightly cleaned (8” x 5.5”)
