# Stunning Spanish Colonial Style Hand-Tooled Leather Trunk / Petaca

Up for auction is a magnificent, highly ornate Spanish Colonial style trunk featuring a traditional dome/barrel lid profile. The entire exterior (top, front, and sides) is completely wrapped in thick, deeply embossed leather adorned with traditional South American polychrome detailing. The colors have an iridescent quality as it has different appearances in different lighting. The motif features spectacular scrolling foliate patterns, vines reliefs framing a prominent hand-wrought central iron locking plate and latch. It does have a hinged compartment inside that I'm uncertain if it's original.

This is an exceptionally striking statement piece perfect for a rustic hacienda, southwestern home, reading room, or global design aesthetic.

**ATTRIBUTION & AGE:**

There are no visible maker's marks, signatures, or stamped dates on the wood or leather that I was able to find. It heavily references 18th-century Viceroyalty of Peru designs. Because its exact era cannot be verified, it is being offered as a high-quality "Spanish Colonial Style" artisanal piece. Please bid according to your own expertise.

**CONDITION REPORT:**

The trunk is in overall very good vintage/antique condition. The structural wood body is sturdy and solid. The hand-tooled leather is well-preserved, remaining flexible with a beautiful aged patina. There are very few and only minor superficial scuffs/tears to the leather surface and edges, which are completely consistent with age and placement. The iron hardware shows expected oxidation and weathering. Please review all high-resolution photos carefully as they form part of the description.
