The Homes and Haunts of Henry Kirk White with some account of the Family of White of Nottingham and Norfolk by John T Godfrey and James Ward published in London and printed for or by Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent and Co et al 1908. Large Paper edition. 

Half vellum and cloth binding over boards, bottom hinge starting to split. red label to the smooth spine with gilt lettering present and simple gilt decoration, no previous owners names , receipt present from Hay on Wye in the year 2000. 

Half title + Frontispiece + loose tissue guard + title page + xii + 1pp illustrations + 2pp contents + 284pp + illustrations + pull out as per photo. contents in very good order. 

Henry Kirke White was a butcher's son from Nottingham who possessed a staggering, self-taught intellect. He worked as an attorney's clerk before his deeply moving religious poetry caught the attention of the academic elite. He won a scholarship to St John's College, Cambridge, where he studied so intensely that his already fragile health collapsed. He died of consumption (tuberculosis) at the age of 21

  • Robert Southey (the Poet Laureate) was so moved by his loss that he collected and published White’s remaining manuscripts.
  • Lord Byron famously wrote a poetic tribute to him in English Bards and Scotch Reviewers, comparing White to a struck eagle killed by an arrow feathered from its own wing.
