Originally compiled in 1775 by a Scottish farmworker named John Howie, The Scots Worthies (originally titled Biographia Scoticana) is one of the most culturally significant books in Scottish religious and political history.
To understand the book, one must understand the Covenanters. In 1638, thousands of Scots signed the National Covenant, a document rejecting the attempts of King Charles I to force English-style liturgy and bishops onto the Scottish Church. They declared that Jesus Christ—not the reigning monarch—was the sole head of their Church
This resistance led to decades of brutal civil war and persecution, culminating in the 1680s, a period known as "The Killing Times." During this era, Covenanters were hunted by royal troops, executed without trial in fields, and tortured for refusing to swear allegiance to the King over their faith
