This historical illustration depicts Japanese troops leading multinational allied forces in the storming of a Taku Fort during the Boxer Rebellion in June 1900.
Historical Context
  • The Conflict: The illustration captures a pivotal moment during  the Battle of the Taku Forts (1900), where naval and amphibious landing forces from the Eight-Nation Alliance fought to capture key defensive positions guarding the mouth of the Hai River near Tianjin, China.
  • The Scene: It dynamically visualizes allied soldiers breaching the fortified earthworks and scaling positions in close-quarters bayonet and sword combat against the defending Qing dynasty forces.
  • Significance: The successful capture of these strategic coastal fortifications allowed international forces to secure the route inland, land heavy reinforcements, and ultimately advance to relieve the besieged foreign diplomatic legations trapped in Beijing.
