Summary

A vintage sterling silver money clip with an engine turned decoration and engraved initials "M.B". Hallmarked at Birmingham in 1996 and made by W I Broadway & Co.

Description

A well made sterling silver money clip featuring a finely engine turned surface, with polished borders and finished with engraved initials "M.B." within a rectangular cartouche.

Engine turning is a traditional decorative technique produced using precision machinery to create repeating geometric patterns that catch and reflect the light. The result is a decorative finish which also hides/resists finger printing.

The reverse carries a full set of Birmingham hallmarks for 1996 together with the maker's mark B & Co, for W I Broadway & Co, a long established Birmingham silversmith noted for producing sterling silver accessories and giftware.

The clip retains a firm spring action and offers a slim, practical way of carrying folded banknotes.

Condition

Good vintage condition with light surface wear consistent with age and careful use.

The spring remains firm and the engine turned decoration is crisp. The engraved initials "M.B" are cleanly executed and form part of the character of the piece.
