Large 8vo sized book in a half blue leather and marble paper binding over boards with raised bands ot the spine and gilt decoration to the bands , only one partial label present , some wear to the edges. Marble paper to the paste down and end papers with the armorial bookplate of Sir Thomas Longmore to the front pastedown. End papers foxed,
Half title (with G Longmore in manuscript to the top) + Title page + xxv + 1pp directions ot the binder + 412pp + 4 battle plans + 1 fold out map to the rear. (small tear to one fold about 1cm otherwise in good order with minor foxing to the reverse) . Pages and battle plans clean throughout.
Broadbere" refers to the Broadbere family of binders and booksellers operating out of Salisbury and Southampton during the 19th century. Their work is respected for neat, durable provincial craftsmanship.
General Sir Robert Thomas Wilson (1777–1849) was one of the most colourful, controversial, and daring British military figures of the Napoleonic Era. Biographers have famously dubbed him an "Astonishing Fellow" due to his high-stakes diplomacy, battlefield heroics, and tendency to clash with political authorities
Clashing with Kutuzov: Wilson marched directly alongside the Russian forces. His journal—the very text in this book—is a critical historical source because he was highly critical of the Russian Commander-in-Chief, Mikhail Kutuzov. Wilson fiercely argued that Kutuzov was too cautious and allowed Napoleon’s escaping army to slip away at the Berezina River when they could have been utterly destroyed.
The armorial bookplate belongs to Surgeon-General Sir Thomas Longmore (1816–1895), an eminent British military surgeon. The Crimean War: Longmore served with distinction in the Light Division during the Crimean War (1854–1855). He was present at major historical conflicts including the Battle of the Alma, Inkerman, Balaclava, and the Siege of Sevastopol. He later became a Professor of Military Surgery and served as an Honorary Surgeon to Queen Victoria
