Île Sainte-Marie (Madagascar)Île Sainte-Marie was one of the most significant pirate strongholds in the Indian Ocean during the late 1600s and early 1700s. As many as 1,000 pirates—including infamous names like William Kidd, Thomas Tew, and Henry Every—are believed to have used the island’s hidden coves and deep harbors to repair ships, resupply, and divide stolen treasure. Located off Madagascar’s northeast coast, the island provided a strategic base for raiding Mughal, Arab, and Portuguese vessels along lucrative trade routes. Several wrecks and a pirate cemetery still mark the area, suggesting long-term settlement by outlaw crews.
