An antique blackened iron and silver inlaid strong box, dating to the late 19th century.

The box is constructed from blackened iron and decorated throughout with silver koftgari style inlay, which tests as sterling silver. The decoration includes floral and scrolling ornament, geometric borders, and vase motifs. The back features an olana style pattern traditionally associated with Indonesia, and the abundant flower vase design to the front is also typical of Java or Madura work.

The box has a swing handle to the top and a lock to the front. The lock is unusual in that it works on a clockwise rotation and releases the locking arms at one specific point. The lock is working and the box still functions as a strong box.

Koftgari is a decorative metalworking technique where fine silver or gold is inlaid into an iron or steel ground, creating a strong contrast between the dark metal and bright inlaid design. This type of silver inlaid ironwork was produced in several regions, with local patterns and motifs helping to identify regional style.

Condition

Good antique condition with age related wear. There is some wear to the surface and some rusting to the base. The lock is working and the box remains usable as a strong box.
