El Sampal meteorite was first found partly buried in soil during a geological prospecting trip, in Argentina in 1973.
This partial slice was etched with nitric acid to uncover the characteristic Widmanstatten pattern which is indicative of a cooling process that takes millions of years. These unique Widmanstätten patterns are only found in the metal alloys in meteorites. The incredibly slow crystallization of the iron-nickel minerals kamacite and taenite within the core of differentiated asteroids and planets, is the only place in the Universe where these patterns are known to form.
