The idle mixture screw on a carburetor is used to adjust the air-fuel mixture at idle speed. Proper adjustment ensures smooth engine operation and optimal fuel efficiency. Here’s how it works and how to adjust it:

Purpose of the Idle Mixture Screw

 • Air-Fuel Ratio: It controls the amount of fuel and air mixed for combustion at idle speed.
 • Location: Typically found on the side or base of the carburetor.
 • One Screw: If there’s one screw, it adjusts the mixture for the entire carburetor.
 • Two Screws: Some carburetors have separate screws for each barrel.

Adjustment Steps

 1. Preparation:
 • Ensure the engine is at operating temperature.
 • Set the idle speed to the manufacturer’s recommended RPM using the idle speed screw.
 2. Identify the Screw:
 • Locate the idle mixture screw(s) on the carburetor body.
 3. Initial Setting:
 • Turn the screw(s) clockwise (in) until they are lightly seated. Do not over-tighten, as it can damage the screw or seat.
 • Turn the screw(s) counterclockwise (out) 1 to 2 turns as a baseline.
 4. Adjust the Mixture:
 • Start the engine and let it idle.
 • Slowly turn the screw(s) clockwise (leaner mixture) or counterclockwise (richer mixture) in small increments.
 • Listen to the engine and watch the RPM:
 • Adjust until the highest, smoothest idle RPM is achieved.
 • If the RPM increases significantly, reduce it to the correct idle speed using the idle speed screw.
 5. Final Check:
 • After adjustment, verify the idle speed and mixture again.
 • Test the throttle response; it should be smooth with no hesitation.
