He was a painter and draughtsman, largely self-taught, with studies also undertaken in Stockholm and France. Bäckman held solo exhibitions in Östersund, Umeå, Örebro, Varberg and at Liljevalchs in Stockholm, and also participated in numerous group exhibitions throughout Sweden.
