Charlie Tyra (1933–2006) was an All-American
forward at University of Louisville and one of college basketball's
dominant rebounders of the 1950s. Nicknamed “King Kong,” he led
Louisville to the 1956 NIT championship. Tyra was selected second
overall in the 1957 NBA Draft and played five NBA seasons with the New
York Knicks and Chicago Packers, averaging 8.9 points and 7.4 rebounds
in 348 games. He later played for the Pittsburgh Rens and remains one of
Louisville's greatest basketball players.
