HISTORY:
Thurios (Greek: Θούριοι), also called by some Latin writers and by Ptolemy, Thurium (Θούριον), during the Roman period Copiae, was a city of Magna Graecia, situated on the Gulf of Taranto, a short distance from Sybaris. It is located in the commune of Corigliano-Rossano, in the province of Cosenza, in the region of Calabria, in Italy.
The founding of Thurium was carried out by Herodotus, Protagoras of Abdera and Hippodamus of Miletus.
Thurium, named after a local spring, was founded in 444 BC, 66 years after the destruction of Sybaris on the same site.
Shortly after the founding of Thurium, the Athenian colonists had to deal with a series of external and internal difficulties. Serious clashes broke out between the newcomers and the descendants of the Sybarites due to problems over the occupation of offices and privileges, as well as over the distribution of lands, disorders that led to the expulsion of the latter.
Abroad, two events characterized the early days of the colony: the war with Tarentum, from 443 to 433 BC, and the war with the Greeks, from 444 to 433 BC. C., for the possession of Syritide, resolved with the foundation of Heraclea in Lucania, and the first military attack by the Lucanians of which there is news from the sources. To face this, the Thurians turned to Cleandridas, exiled from Sparta, who with his arrival in Italy to lead the army of Thurians inaugurated the custom of resorting to chieftains and mercenary armies.
In the years 414-413 BC, Thurians provided 1000 soldiers to Athens at the time of the ill-fated expedition to Sicily.
