Up for auction is this highly sought after, very rare Pre-Revolutionary Russian aluminum canteen complete with clear Hallmarks on the neck indicating the manufacturer; A.O. Ditmar and year; 1903, as well as the Russian Double Eagle produced during the Russian-Czarist era.
The Imperial Russian factory stamp’s inscription is written in pre-revolutionary Russian Cyrillic orthography and reads; ‘
‘Brothers Junker and Schneider’ -top text
‘Joint Stock Company’ -middle text
‘DITMAR’ -bottom text
The hallmark belongs to a well known metalware manufacturer in the Russian Empire. The factory was established through a partnership involving Ditmar alongside Brothers Junker and Schneider. They specialized in producing stamped aluminum and metal goods, including military field equipment.
During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, this company was an official supplier of standard-issue aluminum canteens and camp kitchenware to the Imperial Russian Army (RIA). Operations amped up in early 1900’s prior to the Russo-Japanese conflict.
The hallmarks on the neck of this canteen indicate that this particular flask was put into production in July of 1903… and was in all likelihood used in the field of the Russo/Japanese conflict in 1904-05, although that can not be confirmed.
The original braided cord and stopper are still attached. This canteen shows much patina with dents and a very small hole near the bottom.
Unlike the more common canteens used during WWI, pre-revolution, Imperialist Russian canteens are considerably rarer.
