Early letter dated September 4, 1817, addressed to Michael Richmond at Westford, Connecticut. Neatly written in brown iron gall ink on folded laid paper.

The contents concern a rural New England property dispute involving a cart, grindstone, oxen, and conflicting ownership claims between members of the Whitmore and Buffington families. The writer describes being stopped while transporting the items and having the grindstone removed from the cart.

Research identifies the recipient as Michael Richmond (1786-1881), a prominent early Westford resident whose circa-1814 Federal-style home still survives today in Ashford, Connecticut.

No postal markings, suggesting local hand delivery. Very good condition.

Sir, in complying with your request I went to Mr Buffington’s & got the cart & grindstone & brought them part of the way home & was stop’d by Mr Whitmore & Royal Buffington. Whitmore said the property was his & forbid me going another step with them. They took the grindstone out of the cart & then took my oxen off from the cart.

I was coming across the lots the property is now, I suppose about half way between Whitmores & my house. If you think it best I will come & will show you where it is & will assist in getting it away.

I am yours with respect

Mr. Michael Richardson - Robinson
