A very interesting wall plaque with moonlit owls and moulded rim with antique gold finish.  The plaque only has a paper label for T Goode & Co, a famous high end retailer in London, however the work is unmistakably by Royal Worcester and painted by Charles Baldwyn.  It dates around 1885 which is when this design was produced, most commonly on vases.  At this time artists were not commonly allowed to sign their work at the Worcester factory, so the moonlit owl pieces are generally unsigned, however it is considered by researchers that this design was exclusively painted by Charles Baldwyn.  Pieces are scarce, but of those which are seen the painting is often slightly different on each, following the same aesthetic but with differing poses and features.

There does not appear to be a Worcester mark, there is an incised number (235) to the top of the plaque. Goode's had a strong connection to the Worcester factory in the late 19th and early 20th century, and it is possible this item was a custom commission for a customer, a trial piece, or even a display item (like a modern day point of sale display).  It is fully finished and has moulded holes in the rim for hanging should you wish to display it this way. 

The decoration features three owls with two in flight and the third perched.  The light turquoise detailing is raised enamel giving texture to the birds.  Collectors will recognise that Baldwyn owl pieces are scarce and the painting is generally quite small on vases, so this is a very exciting piece.  We have had a number of moonlit owl vases over the years, but have never seen a plaque before, and if you collect this pattern and artist you are going to adore this piece.  Quite possibly unique.

Condition

Very good for period, minor wear and a few light scratches.  Chip, or perhaps more accurately a firing fault) to the reverse rim lip near the top - not visible to the front.
