Historical Significance:

This medal celebrates General Field Marshal Paul von Hindenburg’s victory at the Battle of Tannenberg in 1914.

• Obverse: A high-relief portrait of Hindenburg in military uniform. Inscribed: "Generalfeldm. v. Beneckendorff u. Hindenburg."

• Reverse: Dramatic allegorical scene featuring a nude warrior (representing Hindenburg/Germany) slaying a bear (symbolizing Russia) with a sword. Inscribed: "Zur Befreiung Ostpreussens 1914" (For the Liberation of East Prussia).

• Artist: Designed by August Hummel and struck at the L. Chr. Lauer mint in Nuremberg.

Item Condition & Specs:

• Metal: Fine Silver (.990 purity).

• Weight: 18.22 grams (Includes the weight of the attached bail).

• Diameter: 33.3 mm.

• Modification: Fitted with a soldered silver-tone loop for use as a pendant.

• Condition: Very Fine (VF). Shows some light wear on the high points of Hindenburg’s face and the warrior's body. Deep, attractive natural toning in the recessed areas provides excellent contrast.
