This is a genuine bronze coin struck during the reign of Emperor Valens (AD 364–378). Valens was the younger brother of Valentinian I and ruled the Eastern Roman Empire during a period of intense Gothic migrations.
Obverse: Features the pearl-diademed, draped, and cuirassed bust of Valens facing right. Legend: DN VALENS PF AVG (Our Lord Valens, Pious Fortunate Augustus).
Reverse: Likely the SECVRITAS REIPVBLICAE (Security of the Republic) type, featuring Victory advancing left, holding a wreath and palm branch.
Historical Note: Valens' reign ended abruptly at the Battle of Adrianople in 378, where he was killed fighting the Visigoths—one of the most significant military defeats in Roman history.
Certification: Authenticated and encapsulated by NGC Ancients.
Patina: This specimen has a warm, copper-toned "desert" or "earthy" patina, which makes the portrait stand out against the darker background.
