Momoyama Period Ceramics and Ceramic Works by KATO Tokuro

Shino, Kiseto, and Oribe ware

INTRODUCTION:

The Momoyama period of the late 16th century, a transitional period from the Middle Ages to the Early Modern period, was an important period in the history of Japanese art, and the same was true in the field of ceramics, where styles that would influence later generations were produced. The completion of the tea ceremony by Sen no Rikyu and the maturation of the Wabicha tea ceremony were also factors in the emergence of unique aesthetic expressions in tea bowls during this period.

Shino ware, Kiseto ware, and Oribe ware, in particular, matured as uniquely Japanese ceramic art forms that clearly expressed the aesthetic sense of the Japanese. (These wares declined with the end of the Momoyama period ).

This book focuses on Shino, Kiseto, and Oribe ware, featuring about 54 masterpieces of Momoyama period pottery, including tea bowls, and 89 works by KATO Tokuro, who explored the long-defunct Momoyama pottery production method and produced excellent works based on his techniques.
