[EN] LATE MERTENS-KUNST: From the late 1940s onward, the German Wall Figures by Alfred Mertens were no longer entirely hand-painted. The eyes – later the hands, too – were created using stencils. After the stencil period, screen printing was employed, initially still with additional hand-painting. From 1966, most figures were marked with the copyright year on the back. The earliest German Wall Figure I know of with a copyright number on the back is ©1966; the latest ©1989. Mertens-Kunst no longer exists. In 2001, “Alfred Mertens Kunstgewerbe GmbH (HRB 350 260)” was dissolved. (From the Book: Vintage German Wall Figures, Die Ära der Märchen-Holzbilder, 2025, Christiane Dietz)
