Hand-carved Belcher-Islands serpentine depicting an Inuit mother cradling her child. 
Signed in syllabics and inscribed with the artist’s government disc number E9-68 on the base (see photo). 
About the Artist Johnny Meeko Sr. (b. 1933) is a renowned Sanikiluaq carver whose work appears in major public collections and exhibitions, including Mother and Child: Sculpture and Prints and Masterwork Sculpture 1985. 
His disc number E9-68 links each piece to Canada’s historic Inuit ID system.
This item measures about 11" in height, about 7" at its widest part, and the base is 5" in length.
