Scarce and Empty Cox’s Best Percussion Cap Tin – Small Size
Description: Decent example of the small-size Cox’s Best percussion cap tin. The distinctive shape of these tins is unique to those used by the Cox family business of Birmingham, England, which operated from the late 1830s through the 1870s.
This two-piece tin retains its original japanned finish, now showing honest age and wear consistent with use. The interior still contains remnants of the original packing material. Cox tins were produced in several sizes, with some of the larger examples stamped on the lid "Cox’s / Best Waterproof / Caps.”
Cox percussion caps were well known in the United States, and documented examples have been found in Confederate possession during the American Civil War, reflecting their widespread export and popularity.
A great example of a uniquely shaped tin from a prominent Birmingham percussion cap manufacturer and an excellent addition to any percussion, Civil War, or British ammunition collection.
