Here is a brief history.

In 1941, during the construction of the Naval Air Station (NAS) Kaneohe Bay, the first Marines stationed there acted as a mounted security force, with their temporary quarters located on the west side of the runway.

Role and Purpose: These mounted Marines provided security during the initial, rapid development of the base, which was built over former farm fields and fish ponds starting in early 1941.

The 1941 Attack: On December 7, 1941 Pearl harbor the base was among the first locations attacked by Japanese aircraft, suffering heavy strafing.

Defense Actions: Despite being largely defenseless, Marines at the base responded to the attack. Notably, Lieutenant John Finn secured and manned a .50-caliber machine gun in a heavily strafed section of the parking ramp, receiving the Medal of Honor for his actions.

Aftermath: Following the attack, Marines continued to defend the base and honor the fallen, including a service on December 8, 1941, for 15 Marines and sailors killed in the attack.

The "Stables" (Building No. 713) at the base are a historic remnant of this initial period.
