Good condition. Former library book with typical markings, stickers and envelopes. Library binding. Water-staining starting on top foreedge corner of p 253 (roughly 1/4" x 1/4") expanding through through to p. 322 (4" x 1.5"). Most of those pages being the index. Shelf and storage wear to covers and edges and small spot stains as shown in photos. 

Overall, a solid, securely bound copy of a sought-after 1st edition with condition issues that do not affect usability of structural integrity, but lacking the gilded pictorial covers. Priced accordingly. 

Comprehensive 19th-century treatise on butterfly morphology, development, and natural history. A richly descriptive text by pioneering American entomologist Samuel Hubbard Scudder. Contains beautiful descriptions of butterfly anatomy, metamorphosis, and species accounts. 1881 publication represents important early American lepidoptera research.
