About the Artist:

Jacques-Enguerrand Gourgue. Gourgue was born in Port-au-Prince in June of 1931. He is the son of a French psychiatrist and a Haitian woman said to have been a mambo.

He had a troubled childhood and turned to the Centre d'Art in 1947. He developed his own style of painting, instantly recognizable, featuring the Haitian mountains, skeletal trees, peasants and their huts, and voodoo symbolism in an almost surrealistic manner. As soon as he had completed his primary education he began painting and quickly achieved world-renown status. When he was only 17 one of his canvases was exhibited at a collective exhibit at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. One of his masterpieces, the "Table Magique" remains part of their permanent collection.

In 1949, at the age of 18, he won the gold medal at the exhibition for the Port-au-Prince bicentennial. He painted voodoo scenes, flowers and images of rural Haitian life. Gourgue's mother is said to have been a mambo (voodoo priestess).

Throughout the '60's '70's and '80's his work was exhibited in prestigious shows in Europe, North America and Latin America.

He died in 1996.  In the words of Nadal and Bloncourt, in their book La Peinture Haitienne, "Gourgue's work reflects an anguished man's sense of the tragic."
