ANTIQUE 1929 THORNTON W. BURGESS "CUBBY GETS A BATH" CHILDRENS BOOK – ILLUSTRATED BY NINA R. JORDAN

A NEAR-CENTURY OLD TREASURE FROM THE MASTER OF CHILDREN’S STORYTELLING

Step back into the charming world of Thornton W. Burgess with this delightful 1927 classic, featuring the iconic 1929 illustrations by Nina R. Jordan. Published by Whitman Publishing, this tiny treasure is nearly 100 years old and represents a golden era of children’s literature. Burgess had a singular gift for capturing the wonders of the natural world through the eyes of animals, and "Cubby" remains one of his most endearing characters.

THE STORY OF CUBBY:

In this sweet, fun-loving tale, we meet Cubby—a sticky little bear cub who has managed to get himself covered in paste! Farmer Brown’s Boy comes to the rescue, luring the curious cub with a bit of maple sugar to convince him to take his very first bath. It is a gentle, whimsical story that has been whispered at bedtimes for generations.

COLLECTOR’S NOTE ON AUTHENTICITY:

Please note that while the front inside cover features a "personal note" and signature from Thornton W. Burgess, this is a beautiful part of the original 1929 printing process and not a hand-signed autograph. This edition was unique in that it lacked traditional endsheets; instead, the soft/hard boards were wrapped in heavy-stock printed paper featuring Burgess's message to his young readers.

CONDITION REPORT:

This book is in "Good" antique condition—especially remarkable given it was designed to be handled by children nearly a century ago!

- BINDING: The original staple-binding remains surprisingly strong and intact.

- STRUCTURE: The book is slightly "off-square" with a minor twist to the spine/composition. This is a common occurrence with these thin "Little Books" when stored under the weight of larger volumes over many decades.

- PAGES: The pages have aged to a beautiful, warm patina, and contain some minor spots/stains. They are all present with only one very short, hardly noticeable tear.

- "LITTLE ARTIST" MARKINGS: A previous young owner left some light pencil scribbles on pages 22-23, adding to the authentic "lived-in" history of this piece.

- EXTERIOR: Shows honest wear to the edges and corners from years of love. Lacks dustjacket (as is common for this edition).
