1927 Savannah Union Station Gate Pass #170 - J.A. Kaufmann SAL - RARE Terminal Item

This is a rare and highly collectible unpunched gate pass for the historic Savannah Union Station. Unlike standard annual passes used for rail travel, a "Gate Pass" was a specialized security credential that granted high-ranking officials access to the secure platforms and restricted areas of the terminal.

Historical Significance:

  • A Lost Architectural Gem: Savannah Union Station was a Mediterranean Revival masterpiece that served as the primary hub for the Seaboard Air Line (SAL), Atlantic Coast Line (ACL), and Southern Railway. Demolished in 1963, artifacts specifically bearing the station's name are highly prized by Georgia and railroad history collectors.

  • Executive Authority: This pass (#170) was issued to J.A. Kaufmann, Chief Clerk to the General Superintendent for the Seaboard Air Line (SAL). In this role, Kaufmann required "all-access" authority to oversee operations at one of the South's busiest rail gateways.

  • Security Rarity: Gate passes were issued in much smaller quantities than travel passes. Finding an unpunched executive specimen from the 1920s is a significant find for any terminal or depot specialist.
